Apr 8    Young Entrepreneurs Academy! Investor Panel Event
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) for middle and high school students was launched in the Rhinebeck School District in November 2012.  This program focuses on a broad definition of entrepreneurship – the transformation of an idea into an enterprise that creates value.  YEA! teaches students not only the importance and purpose of social and business entrepreneurship, but also the process by which one establishes a business enterprise or social movement.  YEA! offers students the opportunity to learn these principles through a yearlong project-based, hands-on entrepreneurial education.  Students are taught to write a business or social action plan, make a pitch to potential investors/ supporters, obtain funding, and launch their company/movement.

At the Investor Panel, students present their business plans before a panel of local distinguished business leaders, in order to compete for funding for their enterprises. The YEA! class of 2013 will explain their businesses, created by local middle and high school students, inspired and instructed by local business leaders. The event is free and open to the public, and is a great way to learn about getting involved in the YEA! Class of 2014-15.

May 16 - May 18    Spring Sidewalk Sale & Rhinebeck Historic Days
The Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce has announced details of its Historic Rhinebeck Days sidewalk sale event, scheduled for May 16th- May 18th. The event will honor the 150th anniversary of the Great Fire in Rhinebeck that destroyed the south side of East Market Street, the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Rhinebeck Post Office, and the 75th anniversary of the Rhinebeck Town Hall building.

“We are ready to honor our unique history in a big way at this year’s sidewalk sale. After all, there is no better place to showcase our past than our Historic village corridor – and as we mark major events from the past, we can enjoy the present as a community while supporting the future by shopping in our downtown district,” said Colleen Cruikshank, Executive Director of the Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce.

Events are free of charge and open to the public, and are scheduled to include the following:

*a re-enactment of the dedication of the Rhinebeck Post Office at 4:00 PM on Saturday, May 17; President Roosevelt, portrayed by Mike Frazier, will deliver the dedication address. The Prince and Princess of Denmark were among the guests that attended the first dedication, and they are expected to be present as well.

*Photographic exhibits of The Great Fire and Civil War memorabilia will be on display at the Starr Library.

*Saturday activities will include a plane from the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome parked for viewing in the Village, guided walking tours of the historic Village of Rhinebeck, and a free showing of Sweet Violets and Aerodrome at 11:00 AM at Upstate Films. In addition, Chancellor Livingston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be at the cemetery adjacent to the Rhinebeck Reformed Church to talk about the patriots buried there and the community-wide project to mark their graves, and the Rhinebeck Fire Department will have Pocahontas on display.

*Patti Gibbons, P.A. Gibbons Studio and Hudson Valley Pottery, will do a brief lecture on various kinds of printing methods pre-1930's and a hands on activity such as making greeting cards using old prints/papers at the Hudson Valley Pottery Studio on Garden Street.

In addition to the sidewalk sale items that will be available along the village streets, store windows will hold displays of pictures, scrapbooks, and memorabilia from various participating organizations. Oblong Books and Music will have a special sale on local history books as well.

Spillover activities on Sunday include a guided walking tour of Ferncliff Forest and a scavenger hunt at the Rhinebeck Cemetery.

Participating organizations planning the weekend activities include the Consortium of Rhinebeck History, Rhinebeck Rotary Club, The Rhinebeck Garden Club, Wilderstein Preservation, Starr Library, American Legion, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, Episcopal Church of the Messiah, Rhinebeck Reformed Church, Third Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rhinebeck Fire Department, Rhinebeck Historical Society, Museum of Rhinebeck History, Rhinebeck Area Chamber of Commerce, and Hudson River Heritage.

May 24 - May 26    Russ Hemenway's Memorial Day Weekend Rhinebeck Tennis Club
Russ Hemenway's
Memorial Day Weekend
Rhinebeck Tennis Club.

Russ visited RTC every Memorial Day Weekend and I can still see him sitting on the patio enjoying a juicy slice of watermelon on a hot summer day.

He was one of RTC's biggest supporters over the past 10 years. He enjoyed the club, taking lessons and playing with the seniors in the morning. Russ would sit around after tennis and tell all sorts of wonderful stories. A true gentleman and ambassador for tennis, with a wicked short angled forehand, Russ gave RTC class and distinction.

Nov 16    Chancellor Livingston DAR Open House
We would like to invite you to join us in celebrating the completion of the renovation & preservation of our historic General Richard Montgomery & Janet Livingston chapter house, the oldest dwelling in the village dating back to the 1750s.

This will be the first time in over 25 years that the entire first floor of the house will be open to the public, and probably the only time in the foreseeable future, since half of the house is our caretaker’s apartment.

As you may know, the other half of the house is our museum where we educate school children and the public about colonial life, Richard Montgomery & his pivotal role in the Revolutionary War, and also tell about his wife Janet Livingston as a woman of strength & industry. The General Richard Montgomery House is listed on the New York State Revolutionary War Trail, and is an accredited museum on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Rhinebeck Village Historic District.

Dec 14    11th Annual Candle Lighting Ceremony / Worldwide Candle Lighting Ceremony
RED HOOK : Burnett & White Funeral Homes of Red Hook and Rhinebeck in conjunction with The Compassionate Friends, will be holding their 11th Annual Candle Lighting Ceremony for anyone in the Hudson Valley area who would like to remember a child who has died. This year the ceremony will be on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at 7:00PM in Red Hook.

The death of a child, sibling, or grandchild, no matter their age, changes the world for their families and friends, and that world will never be the same again. To help those who have suffered the loss of a child, The Compassionate Friends will be once again holding a WORLDWIDE CANDLE LIGHTING CEREMONY. This year will mark the 18th anniversary of the original candle lighting.

Candles will be lit at 7PM local time and they will burn for one hour. Candles are first lit at 7PM just west of the International Dateline, and an hour later in the next time zone, creating a 24-hour wave of light around the world to remember all children who have died, no matter their age or origin.

Those wishing to participate should come to Burnet & White Funeral Home, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook at 6:45 PM on Sunday, Dec. 14th. The lighting of candles will begin at 7PM, followed by a time for sharing memories and fellowship. A remembrance table will be available, and those who attend are encouraged to bring photos and memorabilia to display as well as letters, poems, music or favorite readings to share.

Whether attending or not, everyone is welcome to write a memorial message in our online guest book at www.Burnett-White.com.

For additional information please contact either of the Burnett & White Funeral Homes. In Red Hook call 845-758-5042 or Rhinebeck call 845-876-3193.

Jan 30    7th annual Traditional Robbie Burns Supper
With your Host, renowned Hudson Valley Storyteller Jonathan Kruk, Master Piper Jeremy Freeman, Swordsman Neil Roberts, Songster Big Joe Fitz, Chanteuse ELAINE RACHLIN-  the Honorable Haggis, Whiskey tastings +  other Special Guests.  Reservations suggested. Special overnight  room rates. Presented in association with DAAssociatesPR.com   Pls call 1-845-876-0590 for reservations. www.therhinecliff.com

Celebrate the life and art of the legendary poet Robert Burns. A much-anticipated tradition in our area. Featuring the recitation of Burns's poetry, a traditional dinner with the entrance of the haggis, storytelling, songs, and whisky toasts.

The Rhinecliff  prepares a menu that consists of traditional Scottish dishes like cock-a-leekie soup, “neeps and tatties” (turnips and potatoes mashed together) and lemon curd shortbread, but substitutes a Highland beef stew for what Burns called the “great chieftain o’ the puddin-race.”.
The ceremonies  include the requisite Parade or Piping-in of the Haggis, along with the traditional Selkirk Grace, the Toast of the Lassies and the Lassies’ Response for a bit of good-natured battle-of-the-sexes humor. Master piper Jeremy Freeman will play the bagpipes; storyteller Jonathan Kruk will relate some incidents from the life of Burns; swordsman Neil Roberts will buckle some swash. Participants are encouraged to bring songs, poems and stories by, about and in the spirit of the Bard of Ayrshire. And at the end, everybody joins in singing Auld Lang Syne, in a context where it makes a lot more sense than on New Year’s Eve.

Skullsplitter Ale will be on tap, and whiskeys from Tuthilltown Spirits will be available for tasting. If you want to indulge freely in Highland spirits without falling off the mountainside on the way home, the Rhinecliff offers a special room rate of $149 plus taxes for guests of Burns Night. This event usually sells out, so make your reservations now at (845) 876-0590$39.95 pp.   reception@therhinecliff.com or www.therhinecliff.com.

Jun 6 - Jun 7    Ramapo for Children Hosts Friends and Family Camping Weekend in Rhinebeck
The Fifth Annual Eat, Play, Give! Weekend Is June 6–June 7, 2015

Rhinebeck, NY- June 6-7, 2015—Ramapo for Children is inviting residents of the Mid-Hudson Valley to join with Ramapo alumni, families and friends in a family style summer camp event – Eat, Play, Give! – to be held on Ramapo’s Rhinebeck, NY campus on June 6-7, 2015.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for families to hike, climb, kayak, swim and have fun, as well as a great way to learn about all the wonderful work that Ramapo does for children,” says Chief Executive Officer Adam Weiss.

The weekend offers outdoor fun for all ages. Programming will run Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning and includes challenges on Ramapo’s high ropes course (including a rock climbing wall and zip line), swimming in Sepasco Lake, hiking along 3 miles of wooded trails, arts and crafts activities, petting Ramapo’s farm animals, and much more. It can also be a relaxed getaway for singles and couples to simply enjoy the sun and breathtaking rustic scenery. The event also includes delicious meals featuring foods from local area farms and vendors, as well as an evening campfire and marshmallow roast.

Residents of Dutchess and Ulster Counties receive a 50% discount on the $60.00 per person registration fee for the Saturday only tickets with promotional code “HV50” entered on Ramapo’s registration page at www.EPG2015.eventbrite.com. Children under three are free. Visitors can choose to stay overnight for an additional cost. The ticket price for both Saturday and weekend bunking options is all inclusive.

About Ramapo for Children
Ramapo’s mission is to help young people with challenging behaviors and/or learning differences to find success within their schools, programs, families and communities. Our philosophy is built around the simple belief that all people want the same things: to learn, to be valued for who they are, and to experience success. Ramapo equips adults to see challenging behaviors through the lens of unmet needs and lagging skills, and provides a set of strategies that enable adults to create environments that help children align their behaviors with their aspirations.

For more information about the event, please contact Jennie Stokum at 845.876.8409 or email
jstokum@ramapoforchildren.org.

Sep 6    RHINEBECK JEWISH CENTER NEW BUILDING RIBBON CUTTING
RHINEBECK JEWISH CENTER NEW BUILDING RIBBON CUTTING
The first Synagogue in over 300 years Rhinebeck history.

With great joy we invite the community at large to join us for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new RJC Building Sunday September 6th 4pm.

Cocktails and small bites will be served.

The new building will serve as a synagogue, a hebrew school, a library, and a space for community programs and events, and so much more. We are thrilled to unveil this new space and to utilize it to better serve our community. This is the first time in over 300 years of Rhinebeck's history that a Synagogue is being built.

Please join us and fellow local businesses, the press, community members and elected officials to celebrate this momentous occasion.

The new Synagogue has recycled wood from the existing 100 year old barn preciously standing in its spot, giving it new life in a community center. Coupled with green technology such as rainwater collection and passive heating and cooling, the new building will be energy efficient and proudly green.

A Stained Glass Window From The Past Now Glows For The Future Lida was a bustling town in eastern Poland when the Nazi’s bombed it to oblivion 74 years ago along with an historic synagogue during that dark time in history. Lida was a town much like Rhinebeck, and now a stained glass window has been installed in the newly built Rhinebeck Jewish Center (RJC) at 102 Montgomery Street that pays homage to one that was destroyed in Lida’s Main Synagogue. Stained glass artist, Doris Cultraro, owner of DC Studios Stained Glass in Germantown, just completed the installation of 25 stained glass windows she designed and created for the RJC. The theme of the lost 12 Tribes of Israel, requested by the Rabbi, is depicted in 24 of those windows that span the main sanctuary and the study/community room. The feature sanctuary window pays homage to Lida’s destroyed Synagogue and glows once again with renewed vigor as a beacon of light and hope. The tribute to Lida’s Main Synagogue window is a project that Cultraro has wanted to create for many years. Her mother, Bella Goldfischer, was born in Lida and lived there until her miraculous and daring escape with her Father Leon, and Brother, Michael Stoll, from a Nazi death train bound for Majdanek concentration camp. They survived the following years, until WWII ended, living and hiding in the Naliboki Forest as partisan fighters with the famous Bielski Brothers Brigade, memorialized in the recent Daniel Craig movie “Defiance” directed by Edward Zwick”. Several years ago, after finding vintage postcards depicting of the Lida Synagogue, and its interior with beautiful stained glass, the artist knew that someday recreating the stained glass window design would become a reality. “Fabricating the 12-square-foot window, which depicts the Star of David, has been a personal dream of mine, to honor my family, and the many lives that were lost, and to once again illuminate a beautiful synagogue for future generations”, said Cultraro. Rabbi Hanoch Hecht approached Doris about the stained glass window project. After learning about her mother’s incredible survival during the Holocaust, he knew that the two of them would work together when the time came to build the new synagogue and incorporate the beauty of stained glass into the sanctuary. “The Jewish people must remember the past as we create a future and there is no better way than this window representing that.” says Rabbi Hecht, and adding, “The dedication for the new Rhinebeck Jewish Center will take place on Sunday, September 6th at 4 p.m. This will be the first synagogue in Rhinebeck’s 300 year history. This Center includes the beautiful main sanctuary and multipurpose room, a Hebrew School and Library, facilities for Shabbat dinners, and the Jewish experience for children.” The crowning feature window in the main sanctuary above the Bimah (or pulpit), where the Torah Scrolls are stored, is a redesign of the magnificent window stylized from the Lida Synagogue, and it is surrounded by 12 colorful windows representing the symbols of the dispersed lost Tribes of Israel. “When viewing the glow of color through these jewel-like windows, the light sparkles and brightly illuminates the interior and touches the soul. The beauty of stained glass is that it is a living medium of dynamic color and is never static - a message that all of us are living, dynamic, and never static as we continue to remember where we came from, to have respect for each other, and where we go as we look to the future,” says Doris. Sep 21    NDH Thrift Shop Celebrates New Space with Ribbon Cutting
To celebrate a larger and renovated new location, a special grand opening event will be held for Sweet Repeats Thrift Shop at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21 at 97 Montgomery St.

Hosted by the Rhinebeck and Red Hook Area Chambers of Commerce with Northern Dutchess Hospital, the event will feature a ribbon cutting, refreshments and “buy 2, get 1 free” discounts storewide, as well as extended shop hours until 7 p.m. The thrift shop is run by the hospital’s volunteer-based auxiliary and all proceeds benefit the hospital, which is a nonprofit.

Thanks to many upgrades, Sweet Repeats now boasts hardwood floors and slat walls where accessories such as scarves, hats and purses as well as household goods are neatly displayed. Freshly painted shelves hold a wide collection of kitchenware and modern clothing racks allow for better browsing of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing. For shoppers’ convenience, two dressing rooms and a handicap entrance were added and credit cards are now accepted. A designated nearby parking lot is under construction.

The ribbon cutting is open to the public. For information about volunteering or donating items, the thrift shop can be reached at 845-876-4255. Normal hours are: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For hospital information, visit www.healthquest.org/ndh
