Apr 8    Young Entrepreneurs Academy! Investor Panel Event
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) for middle and high school students was launched in the Rhinebeck School District in November 2012.  This program focuses on a broad definition of entrepreneurship – the transformation of an idea into an enterprise that creates value.  YEA! teaches students not only the importance and purpose of social and business entrepreneurship, but also the process by which one establishes a business enterprise or social movement.  YEA! offers students the opportunity to learn these principles through a yearlong project-based, hands-on entrepreneurial education.  Students are taught to write a business or social action plan, make a pitch to potential investors/ supporters, obtain funding, and launch their company/movement.
 
At the Investor Panel, students present their business plans before a panel of local distinguished business leaders, in order to compete for funding for their enterprises. The YEA! class of 2013 will explain their businesses, created by local middle and high school students, inspired and instructed by local business leaders. The event is free and open to the public, and is a great way to learn about getting involved in the YEA! Class of 2014-15.

Top Magazine Chooses Hudson Valley Getaway Builder for 2014 House of the Year

 
Catskill Farms Builds Showcase Home for Country Living Magazine, Featured in Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck, NY
 
Eldred, NY (April 3, 2014) – Hudson Valley designer, builder, and realtor of traditional homes in the Catskill Mountains, Charles Petersheim, has been selected by Country Living Magazine to build its 2014 House of the Year. The 1,500 square-foot, 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom house, located in Rhinebeck, will be showcased during the annual Country Living Fair this June. The magazine will also publish a 10-page spread of the home in its September issue, featuring a profile on Petersheim and Catskill Farms.
 
For the last 15 years, Country Living has been remodeling and building homes all over the country to promote as their House of the Year. The annual project consists of Country Living’s design team and a local designer/builder who work together to build a home that showcases the latest design trends. After the home is completed, a robust feature of the process is published in the magazine for its 11 million readers.
 
“This feature is a great progression of our brand’s national coverage,” said Petershiem. “It works because our design approach and philosophy mirrors that of the magazine’s. It’s rare that Country Living features the builder as well as the home, so we’re very grateful to be a part of this project.”
 
It is also the first time the house will be a part of the Country Living Fair, where hundreds and thousands of people will be able to tour the house.
 
“It’s a real compliment for us and a testament to our passion for country homes,” added Petersheim.
 
Catskill Farms has also been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, New York Post, and was chosen by the DIY Network to build its 2010 Blog Cabin.
 
The home, which has already been purchased, is a regionally-inspired farmhouse with more than 1,000 square feet of porches and covered decks. Much like the getaway homes that Petersheim’s company designs and builds in its other markets, this house mirrors the same intricacies and attention-to-detail that has become the signature of Catskill Farms. With wide-plank floors, salvaged plank ceilings, open floor plans, and security system with all the newest amenities, the house has an ‘old-home feel’ with modern luxuries and conveniences.

The Rhinebeck Arts Festival, held at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, will be a celebration of artistic expression in its many forms with a main focus on craft, visual art, food and music. Cocktails at Sunset is the premier fundraiser for the Chamber and our theme,

Tourism's 2013 economic impact numbers are in, and we are pleased to tell you that they are up overall! Direct spending by visitors in 2013 was a healthy $481,545,000 (up from $475,556,000 in 2012). 

 

Tourism sustains 8,774 full-time jobs, generating $245,396,000 million in payroll. This is an increase from 8,436 FTE tourism jobs in 2012, with a payroll of $243,058,000. Visitor expenditures include Transportation, $132 million; Food, $111 million; Lodging, $92 million; Shopping, $85 million; and Recreation, $32 million.

 

Locally, Dutchess County realized $34,371,429 in tax revenue in 2013, an increase from 2012's tourism- generated income of $33,637,676. Nearly 4½ million travelers visit Dutchess annually. Thanks to you, our valuable partners, for welcoming so many guests as they come to enjoy the countless sites and attractions that are Distinctly Dutchess. Here's hoping 2015 is a similarly good year for all of our tourism businesses; as the motto of New York State says, "Excelsior!" Ever upward!

Kim Cantine and Architect Jeffrey Milstein will be celebrating the opening of their new store in the Village of Rhinebeck, Tulip, a modern gallery with fresh cut flowers, contemporary photography, designer gifts, and home decor.  Tulip's floral service includes flowers from around the world (as well as locally sourced in season) either by the stem or full design service for both private and corporate clients.  Jeffrey Milstein’s photographs have been exhibited and collected though out the United States and Europe, and are currently represented in the USA by Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles and Benrubi Gallery in NYC.  Tulip offers a curated selection of contemporary photography, and a selection or gifts, and home decor by both local and legendary designers like Arnie Jacobsen, and Charley and Ray Eames.

Sep 21    NDH Thrift Shop Celebrates New Space with Ribbon Cutting
To celebrate a larger and renovated new location, a special grand opening event will be held for Sweet Repeats Thrift Shop at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21 at 97 Montgomery St.
 
Hosted by the Rhinebeck and Red Hook Area Chambers of Commerce with Northern Dutchess Hospital, the event will feature a ribbon cutting, refreshments and “buy 2, get 1 free” discounts storewide, as well as extended shop hours until 7 p.m. The thrift shop is run by the hospital’s volunteer-based auxiliary and all proceeds benefit the hospital, which is a nonprofit.
 
Thanks to many upgrades, Sweet Repeats now boasts hardwood floors and slat walls where accessories such as scarves, hats and purses as well as household goods are neatly displayed. Freshly painted shelves hold a wide collection of kitchenware and modern clothing racks allow for better browsing of women’s, men’s and children’s clothing. For shoppers’ convenience, two dressing rooms and a handicap entrance were added and credit cards are now accepted. A designated nearby parking lot is under construction.
